The one that he crashed on the way home from the dealership before he even got his license? Yeah, he still doesn’t have it back yet; the accident was in January. Well, as part of the repairs the ENTIRE ENGINE was replaced, but now it smokes like a chimney. The body shop says it’s BMW’ s problem, and the BMW says it’s the body shop’s problem. So, no car, at least no BMW . Instead he’s driving a rental. A rental? At age 16? Seriously? Is that even allowed? C’mon - buy the kid a $1,5 00 beater and make him work to buy something better, or at least to pay his insurance bill which now has to be outrageous.
Yeah, no - none of that will happen...

Illegal left turn, in the rain, on the way home from the dealership having just purchased the car . T-boned on the passenger side, where my sister was sitting. Still on his learners permit at the time. For two people as educated as my sister and BIL, they really make some highly questionable decisions IMHO.
N ow I’ve had some fancy cars in my day (BMW, MB, Porsche), but those we re all bought used. My only new car was (is?) the $17 ,000 Mazda5 6MT that is my DD, a car I bought 7 years ago at age 45. The idea of a new car, especially something fancy like a BMW, was something I could not have fathomed as a teenager. I was happy to be given mom’s old Dasher wagon when I turned 16 because any wheels meant freedom.

The car needed an engine replacement after a side impact, and a body shop was tasked with the swap? On a BMW?

These are the details I’m getting second hand through my folks. My sister doesn’t really talk to me, not even when I went in for cancer surgery...

That X2 is now clearly connected to quite a lot of dumbfuckery.

My guess is that it’s AWD with the front diff mounted to the engine. Right front wheel takes impact, steering and suspension bends, axle takes remaining force and transfers it into the diff and then into the engine. Some part of engine cracks.
I’ve seen it happen, and total a car with no body damage (slid into curb at I think 40mph, lots of damage underneath).

I forgot some of these new “BMWs” are actually FWD Minis.

Right! I hadn't even been thinking of FWD-based stuff!

This is all a damn shame.
My dad was low key on lessons. First, he came home when I was ten or twelve and said, “I found a church that pays $20 if you mow & trim their lawn.” So my brother & I did it every week.
Then he said, “The Post Office will give you $10 to mow their lawn, which is right next to the church and a small patch of grass—a good deal.” So we did that.
Soon there were 2 funeral homes he found, then a realtor with rental properties, and finally we were mowing the realtors listed homes for $40.
By the time I was in high school, we made cash to buy a Grand Wagoneer with a 360 V8, two Lawn Boy mowers, and a trailer to pull them in for our little empire.
I respect the hell out of my dad.
